The Cubs are acquiring DH José Martínez from the Rays, per ESPN’s Jeff
Passan (Twitter link). Chicago is sending two players to be named later in
exchange. The Cubs have since announced the deal. Catcher Josh Phegley has
been designated for assignment to clear roster space.

The Cubs have been searching for a complementary right-handed bat ahead of
Monday's Trade Deadline, and they found one in José Martínez. Chicago
acquired Martínez from the Rays in exchange for a pair of players to be
named later or cash consideration, the club announced on Sunday.

Josh Phegley was designated for assignment to clear a roster spot.

In 24 games this season, Martínez has hit .239 with two homers, 10 RBIs and
a .717 OPS for Tampa Bay, but it is his career track record against lefty
pitching that appeals to the Cubs. In 336 career plate appearances against
lefties, Martínez has posted a .319/.392/.554 slash line against southpaws.
