tvOS 15 supports signing into apps with Face ID or Touch ID on the iPhone

Signing into supported apps on the Apple TV, thanks to updates to tvOS, is relatively easy. However, Apple is simplifying the process with the upcoming launch of tvOS 15. As outlined today in a developer video, the set-top box’s software will soon support signing in via biometric security. On an iPhone.

The Apple TV doesn’t directly support Face ID or Touch ID for obvious reasons. However, with the public launch of tvOS 15 later this year, users on supported Apple TV units will be able to use those biometric security measures to sign into apps.

Developers will be able to implement new tools that offer this support with tvOS 15. Once available, a user will be able to sign into an app on their Apple TV by utilizing the biometric security measure of choice on their iPhone. In this case, it will either be Face ID or Touch ID, depending on what’s available on your device.

Now, when you come across an app you need to sign into, there will be a few different options. You can see them in the image above. At the top there is the option to “Sign in with Apple Device.” If you choose that option, a notification will be sent to your iPhone. It’s there that you’ll have the option to authenticate signing into that app via Face ID or Touch ID (or by manually entering the password, if you prefer).

The other sign-in options include “Restore Purchase,” “Sign in Manually,” and “Sign in with TV Provider.”
