Hosting two near sell-out US baseball matches at the Olympic stadium delivered a ￡53m economic boost to London, research suggested on Wednesday.

About 110,000 fans attended the two Major League Baseball games between the St Louis Cardinals and the Chicago Cubs in June – with 21,000 people travelling from the US and about 10,000 from mainland Europe.

Major League Baseball is due to return to the Olympic stadium next year – whenthe New York Mets play the Philadelphia Phillies twice – and again in 2026, under a deal signed in New York last year by Mayor Sadiq Khan.
